About HNW

Humanity Network for Women is a non-profit initiative based in Switzerland, empowering Afghan women and girls through accessible education, women's health awareness and community-led initiatives - in Afghanistan and in the diaspora.

Our story

I got to know my own body in the emergency room. No woman should have to get to know hers that way.

- Wajma Mohammadi, Founder of HNW

For years, HNW’s founder lived with severe pain, because visiting a gynaecologist as an unmarried woman was considered taboo. After arriving in Switzerland, she was taken to hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with endometriosis.

She turned this experience into a mission: to break taboos and make sure other women have access to knowledge, support and healthcare, without fear or shame.

The challenge

Since the Taliban returned to power, girls have been banned from secondary education, and women's health remains a taboo in many communities. UNICEF warns that Afghanistan could lose more than 25,000 female teachers and health workers by 2030. Source: UNICEF, 27 April 2026

Causes

  • Restrictions on girls' education
  • Social stigma and cultural taboos
  • Language barriers
  • Lack of trusted health information
  • Limited access to safe spaces

Consequences

  • Girls remain excluded from education
  • Preventable health problems continue
  • Women lose opportunities for economic and social participation
  • Communities remain trapped in cycles of inequality

Our approach

Women-led, community-driven, culturally sensitive, evidence-informed - and designed to reach Afghan women wherever they are.
